Dear One,
I'm bumping along happily in my work day when it hits me,
stopping me in my tracks, then heading me for the refrigerator.
WHAT? I wonder. What is wrong with me? Why am I not
getting more done? Or THIS BLOG written? Or maybe I
distract myself by being mad at my mate... no, food is better...
I don't acknowledge that I am afraid. Afraid of What, after all?
I have everything... great health (well, my eyes have been
acting up and my vision is half what it should be), a career I
love that is meaningful, fulfilling and successful enough (but
what if it tanks this month? What will I do then?).
I have a fantastic mate (what if I screw it up and am not a good
enough partner and he gets bored or I don't give him enough
attention?) I have a modest home that I love (what if, what if,
what if...), I have food in the refrigerator, heck, I HAVE a
refrigerator!
That's when the fear starts to melt away. I used to think it
was about the food, but it is about the GRATITUDE! That
is what gets me out of fear and trouble.
I learned this from Dr. Robert Emmons, a 20 year researcher
of Gratitude. It seems he has discovered that you cannot
hold fear when you are in gratitude. And not just generic
gratitude like for being alive, but more specifically, gratitude
for things people have given me or done for me. Gratitude
for receiving more than I have given. Wow.
I see now that I was not going to the refrigerator to EAT my
way out of fear but rather to feel gratitude for my abundance
that I have not earned. None of us can ever “earn” what we
receive in our lives each day.
We CAN accept and be grateful for all that we are gifted with.
And the fear is magically gone...I can always have more than
I can ever work for. The scared, sad little inner child inside
of me relaxes a bit. She isn't being asked to do any more
to be worthy, she already just IS.
And I am free to go back about my business, doing the next
task the best I know how. And it is enough. Gratitude helps
me feel like I am enough.
Try it and see...Make a list of things people have done
for you. If you think you have done it all yourself, you
may need to dig a bit deeper and recognize all the people
who plant, grow, harvest, ship, stock, and check out your
food.
Do the same with your phone or computer or ANY
physical thing in your home. Do you have any idea what
it took to create the energy in your house? You could
probably link to a million individuals who made it
possible for you to be right there in your home.
I am humbled by this but I am no longer afraid. I am
SO supported! And none of that support comes from
me having to be perfect or worthy or anything. Just
to breathe and BE.
Be Well and Grateful My Dear One!,
Nina
