Dear One,
I was deeply moved when I heard Revolutionary Futurist Peter Russell in his dialogue with Integralist Terry Patton titled “Supposing it’s too late…what then?”
Peter was creating possible future scenarios for Shell Oil for their 30 year projections and he had to table the one possibility that it might be "too late". He described how he had to break through his own denial after tucking
Scenario X away when the Shell project was done.
How does THAT relate to saving your relationship with your spouse?
... Read on!
At one point, he realized that he was denying a possible reality and narrowing what he could
“be with” as an individual and what he could offer as a teacher and thinker. If he was doing that, what was the rest of the world doing?
Peter started to honestly confront the question “what if it is too late, what then?”
"How should he be? How should he teach? What could he offer people for the transition that would ensue during such an unraveling — the pain, the suffering...
the break down of life as we know it?"
(Starting to sound familiar?)
He realized that being secure in ourselves, creating deeper community, developing flexibility in thinking, spontaneous creativity, and greater compassion and care --
these were the key qualities that would be needed in Scenario X.
The very same resources, skills and capabilities that will be needed to transform and “save” the world are those that will be needed to bring care and compassion to its unraveling.
I propose that the very same skills - inner security, closer connection and community, flexibility in thinking, more spontaneous creativity, and greater compassion and care are EXACTLY the same qualities you will need NO MATTER WHAT the outcome ends up being of you trying to save your marriage.
In other words, it no longer depends on what your partner wants or does, YOU still need to step up and BE who you need to be... Kind, Compassionate, Caring, Connected, and Creative. And I recommend you start with yourself!
